The word nuru comes from Japanese and means slippery. The original technique was developed in Japan and involves a water-based gel made from nori seaweed extract, applied across the full body of both the client and the therapist. The therapist then uses their entire body — not just their hands — to massage the client, creating a uniquely sensual and deeply relaxing experience.

How We Do It in Cape Town

Our version uses warm, organic virgin coconut oil rather than the traditional seaweed gel. This is a deliberate choice: coconut oil is easier to source in South Africa, far simpler to sanitise between sessions, and genuinely beneficial for your skin. We also work on king-size beds rather than plastic sheets or kiddy pools, which makes the experience more comfortable and more intimate. The result is a warm, fluid, full-body massage unlike anything you'll experience at a conventional spa.

What to Expect

Your session begins with a brief consultation with your therapist to discuss preferences and any areas of tension. You'll then be given privacy to undress and settle onto the bed. Your therapist will warm the coconut oil before applying it, and the massage will proceed at a pace that suits you. Sessions typically run 60 or 90 minutes. You'll have access to a private ensuite shower after your session.
